Nervous Sweating and How To Deal With It

Excessive nervous sweating can be a nightmare, especially if you are in an important occasion. An interview for your dream job, your first date, or an important presentation for work are just a few examples of situations where you wouldn’t want to experience excessive underarm sweating. It is common for people to experience this kind of increased sweating when they’re nervous, or feeling increased levels of stress or anxiety.

Unfortunately there may not be much you can do to actually stop this kind of nervous sweating when it occurs but fortunately there are some simple ways to stop that excessive sweat from turning into highly visible and embarrassing sweat marks. And that is ironically one of the most helpful things..if no one can see that you are sweating then you tend to stop worrying so much and hey presto, you stop sweating as much!

Avoid wicking fabrics as they promote wicking of moisture to the surface of a garment which means they bring sweat marks more quickly to the outer surface of a shirt.

4. Arrive Early and Relax

If you are particularly concerned about sweating prior to an important event then do yourself a favour and make sure you arrive 20 minutes early. That way you can sit in the air conditioned cool of the building and take some time to relax. If you are in a rush then you will be moving faster which will promote sweating and you will probably be stressed out which will make the perspiration issue even worse. Take your time, arrive early and give yourself time to wind down and relax.

5. Watch What You Eat and Drink

No matter how much you love spicy cuisine, it might lead in increased sweating especially if you are nervous or anxious. Spicy foods tend to fire up our bodies and trigger sweating so try and avoid these in the days and hours before important events.

What you drink may be as important as what you eat in terms of inducing sweating. Fizzy beverages contain high sugar levels and tea and coffee contain caffeine. Both of these ingredients are known to increase sweating and caffeine and a sugar spike can increase anxiety levels which will further compound the problem. Avoid fizzy and caffeinated drinks before important events if you can.

6. Clinical Strength Antiperspirant

As the name suggests, a deodorant helps with blocking odour whilst an antiperspirant helps to block perspiration. There are many clinical strength antiperspirants available on the market however I have never personally come across any that work for me (I suffer from axillary hyperhidrosis) but that does not mean they won’t work for you. Many people seem to be impressed by them and so they should definitely be part of your toolbox for tackling heavy sweating.

7. Stay Hydrated

It is important to stay well-hydrated at all times, no matter if you suffer from sweating issues or not. It is recommend that you drink at least eight glasses of water a day and staying well hydrated before an important event will help your body in regulating its heat and stop it from triggering sweat signals.

8. Dress in Layers

It might seem counter-intuitive to dress in layers if you tend to sweat a lot, but this can help you block sweat patches or stains from reaching your outer garments. Remember that you won’t be able to actually stop the sweating but what you can do is stop that sweat from ever being seen by others. Get a quality close fitting undershirt as your base layer. Wear a looser fitting shirt as the next layer. This will form an air gap between your base undershirt and the outer shirt which will reduce the chances of sweat marks being transferred as well as allow better air flow and breathability. If possible it is best to stick with 2 layers so you don’t get too hot and also because a third layer will decrease the breathability and will push the outer garment onto your body thus increasing the chance of moisture transfer.

9. Stay Cool and Collected

Staying relaxed and calm will go a long way to decreasing the anxious sweating that comes from an important occasion. The fact is that once you are assured in the knowledge that no one can see you are sweating buckets then instantly you stop worrying, you feel calmer and you sweat less!
